Birchbox August 2013

This month’s Borchbox has a theme.  They always do.  I can’t remember the theme for this month and I am too lazy to get up.  But you can trust me when I say that the theme has nothing to do with the contents.

Oh…I just pulled up the Birchbox site to link the products and I saw that the theme is “Finishing School.”  So you can take a look at the products and see if you think they are fitting for the theme.

photo (1)Whish Deodorant Swipe ($22.00) – All-natural ingredients saccharomycess ferment, odenone, and chaparral extract work together to reduce odors and hair growth. The single-use packets are the perfect addition to your purse, gym bag, or desk drawer at work.

This product is interesting.  It says they also inhibit hair growth.  I have a odd (yet very lucky) quirk in that I have hardly any hair in my armpits.  I hate the word armpit by the way.  Anyway, it’s pretty awesome because I rarely shave them, and I don’t have to deal with razor burn or stubble.  I will stash this in my purse in case I am feeling stinky one day.  I am sure it will get used.  I don’t see myself shelling out for more of these though.

photo 2

Whish Exfoliating Body Wash ($22.00) – Lemon extract, apple extract, and green tea extract work together to even and brighten skin tone. Sugar cane and bamboo powder exfoliate, while organic shea butter and organic coconut oil hydrate. Oat extract is known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

This has a delicious coconut scent and I really enjoy the Whish shave cream sample I received so I am excited about this one.  According to the Birchbox site this is gentle enough to be used on the face.  I probably won’t do that, but I like that it will be gentle on my sensitive skin.

photo 4

OC8 Professional Mattifying Gel ($41.00) – This fast-drying gel creates a soft, invisible layer that absorbs oil and nixes redness for eight full hours, thanks to microscopic Acrysorb® particles. What it doesn’t do: leave skin sticky or clog pores.

This product sounds awesome and I am excited to try it.  I am kind of hoping it doesn’t work though.  I don’t want to fall in love with something that costs $41 for 1.6 oz.

photo 3

Cailyn Gel Eyeliner ($21.00) – The easy-to-blend potted formula lasts for 24 hours and is water-resistant. And unlike most long-wear formulas, this all-natural variety sits comfortably on delicate skin.

I actually received this in my Glam Bag and I still haven’t tried it.  That one was purple so I am hoping I like this product and can use both of them.  I really need to start using up my samples.  I am planning to stop buying anything besides my monthly Birchbox and Glambag and I really want to start using up some of the stuff I have.  I think that pretty regularly though and it still hasn’t happened.  But this time I mean it!  Probably.

photo 1

Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper ($10.00) –  Curls are notoriously temperamental, and this hardworking serum fights off the frizz-inducing effects of humidity and dryness alike. The water-activated formula provides weightless hold and brings misbehaving strands into line. It’s great for all kinds of curls, from kinks to ringlets.

So I kind of love this product.  I have tried multiple curly hair products this summer and this is my favorite.  It is liquid…watery liquid, which really surprised me, but that helps keep my hair from feeling coated and weighed down.  I let my hair air dry and it didn’t get frizzy!  I am going to buy this for sure.

So that is my August Birchbox.  Do you totally get the finishing school theme?  Silly.  Anyway, it was alright this month.  I always feel happy if I find something I want to buy.  I have seen some cool things in other people’s boxes though.  Were you happy with yours this month?

Allure Beauty Box Fall 2013

Holy moly…this box may be my favorite thing of all time.  Cosmetic related I mean.  I posted on FB when this box went on sale, and it sold out in under 30 minutes.  I had planned to post about it before it went on sale, but I was actually in Chicago Midway at the time on my way home from NYC.  That was a whole unplanned drama dealing with flight delays but luckily my plane landed in time for me to place my order!  I hope some of you were able to get this box, and I will try to post a heads up for everyone next time!

So without further ado, I will give a rundown of the box contents.  I rarely do a price breakdown (because I am lazy), but this time I will.  I feel like it’s such a good value that it will help justify to cost to myself and to future Allure Beauty Box purchasers.  Almost all of the products are full size, and I will note if the price does not match up with quantity I received and calculate the value.

box 1The box was somewhat large and heavy, and after I removed the tissue I saw that it was separated in sections with a bunch of packing peanuts.  I ended up just pulling out the cardboard divider and fishing all the products out from the box full of peanuts.

box 2

I decided for pictures I would try to lump the products together into categories for ease of photos and explanations.

WOW!!  The best part is that I will actually use most of these products.  I’m not sure about the face wash or the airbrush legs, but everything else sounds awesome.  I will review things for you as I try them out.  I can’t say enough good things about this purchase, and I will definitely try to purchase these Allure Beauty Boxes in the future!  Was anyone else lucky enough to get a box this year?  Do you love it as much as I do?!

Sally Hansen Salon Effects

Super quick post – I finally got around to using these Sally Hansen Salon Effects nail wraps that I got in my Target Beauty Box.  I didn’t think I liked the pattern when it was in the box, but I don’t hate it on my nails.  As far as the actual wraps go, I love them!  They were pretty easy to use, although that may be because I do my nails a lot.  I love that they were immediately dry.  I hate waiting for my nails to dry, and that’s the reason I don’t paint my nails more often.  I will definitely be buying these again!

I’m alive!  I am so sorry that it’s been a few weeks since I last posted.  I was on my trip to NYC and then got back and left again for a work trip to MI.  I am finally back in town, caught up on everything, and ready to start talking about beauty products!  NYC was a blast and I tried out a few great things that I want to tell you about.

Ole Henriksen Protect the Truth SPF 50+ ($35.00) – This lightweight, oil-free sunscreen is sheer enough to wear under any daily moisturizer without feeling heavy. Made with Ole Henriksen’s Solar Active Complex™, this product includes multiple ingredients to protect skin from environmental aggressors and harmful UVA and UVB rays. It also boosts skin’s natural repair function to address pre-existing damage.

I received this in the Sephora Sun Care Kit I ordered at the start of summer and I love it!  I have been wearing it whenever I am going to be in the sun for an extended amount of time and I haven’t had any issues with sunburn.  It doesn’t cause me to breakout or feel like I have sunscreen on my face.  And even in NYC when I was sweating like crazy this stuff stayed on my face all day.  Definitely recommend!

Redken Soft Spin 05 (discontinued) – Lightweight gel boosts fine curls with healthy bounce.  Features the curl-care complex with avocado oil to define curls, control flyaways, and add soft, crunch-free shine.

This stuff is great!  It gives my curls definition without weighing them down.  I literally had a stranger stop me at work after using this to tell my that my curls looked great.  Unfortunately this product has been discontinued.  I guess I will have to settle for non-stranger stopping curls now.  Sorry to waste your time reviewing something that doesn’t exist, but I am sad about it and wanted to share my misery.

Marvis Toothpaste ($6.00) – Imported from Italy, this stylish toothpaste makes brushing your teeth anything but routine.

Regular readers may recall that I was somewhat disappointed when I received this ridiculously overpriced toothpaste in my Birchbox a few months ago.  I packed it for my NYC trip.  I have to say, it was THE MOST AMAZING TOOTHPASTE of my life!!  Not.  It was fine and had a minty flavor.  It is not worth the price.

Whish Shave Cream ($20.00) – This decadent shave cream from whish one-ups its competitors. Made in the U.S. with eco-friendly ingredients, the non-drying formula gives you a mighty close shave without leaving legs devoid of moisture.

I really liked this shave cream.  It helped my razor glide smoothly and it left my legs feeling moisturized.  I love the smell of it so much!  I had the blueberry scent, and it smells awesome.  All that being said, it’s quite pricey for shave cream.  I use a razor with built in shave cream anyway, so I will not be purchasing this product.

Klorane Dry Shampoo ($18.00) – Made with softening oat milk extracts, plus corn and rice starches, this ultra-fine powder spray leaves nary a trace of residue behind.

I have tried many brands of dry shampoo and this is hands down my all time favorite.  It smells great, it works great, and it doesn’t leave my hair feeling dry.  It is also $18 per can.  I can’t stop thinking about this dry shampoo, and I think it will be my next Birchbox points purchase.  In the meantime I am using the new Suave Keratin dry shampoo and I like it alright.  I like it better than the original Suave, although the original smells better.

Revlon Color Stay Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain ($8.99) – A pampering balm fused with a lightweight lipstain in an adorable chubby crayon by Revlon.

My cousin had this on her lips when we were hanging out in NYC.  I noticed that after bebopping around the city in 140 degree heat for hours she still had lip color.  It turns out she was using this lip stain, and she let me try it.  It’s easy to apply and really lasts without being too drying.  She gave me one that I have been using and liking, and I just received another in a box that I will be reviewing for you all this week.  I highly recommend this stain for long lasting color.

I hope you all enjoy the reviews, and I will be posting a lot more this week.  I am done with travel and I have all sorts of goodies to tell you about!

July 2013 Ipsy Glam Bag

photo 1

This post is going to be pretty quick because I am heading to NYC in the morning for my trip.  Woo!  I really liked my Glam Bag this month!  The actual bag is cute, and I liked all of the products.

photo 1 (1)

Coola Mineral Face SPF 20 Unscented Moisturizer ($36.00) – Keep the sun and environment at bay with this SPF 20 broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen; a clear, Titanium Dioxide based formula (for those who are Zinc sensitive) made with 98% natural ingredients. This sunscreen is hypoallergenic, paraben-free, ultra sheer, anti-aging, and water resistant for 40 minutes.

I received another sample of a Coola product in a recent Birchbox and I was really impressed with it.  I was very excited to see this included in my glam bag because I tend to like mineral products.  I am excited to try it out.

photo 2 (1)

Demeter Salt Air Perfume Oil Roll On ($10.00) – Demeter Fragrance Library’s Perfume Oils come in over 250 scents. Their perfume oils provide a long lasting fragrance alternative while pampering your skin.  Imagine a perfect sea breeze on the perfect beach at your favorite tropical island. Now you have the perfect description of Demeter’s Salt Air.

I love the way this smells!  It reminds me of being at the beach.  It’s light and summery.  I am packing it for my trip since it’s in the 90s in NYC right now.  I think it will be a perfect light scent for the hot weather.

photo 2

Sexy Hair Weather Proof Humidity Resistant Spray ($18.95) – Big Sexy Hair Weather Proof Humidity Resistant Spray is a high-performance humidity resistant spray that promises to leave your hairstyles intact, removing any chance of humidity attacking mishaps.

Another item that is making its way into my bag for my trip.  I always love a free hair spray!

photo 3 (1)

BH Cosmetics California Collection Eyeshadow Sample ($9.95) – This BH Cosmetics makeup palette includes a shade from each of the California Collection palettes: Hollywood, San Francisco, and Malibu.

I will use these eyeshadows, but this is probably the item I am least excited about.  I just feel like I have so much eye shadow…it’s kind of boring.

photo 3

POP Beauty Pouty Pop Crayon in Fuchsia Flirt ($25.00 for 6 pack) – POP’s Pouty Pop Crayon nourishes, treats, and adds that perfectly-plumped pop to lips. These extra-nourishing balms gently bounce onto lips creating a plumped & pillowy pout leaving them with luscious, long-lasting colour with a super-smooth texture. Available in six shades.

I actually love this fuchsia shade!  I thought maybe it would be too bright, but I apply it lightly and it looks fun and not too bright.

Good job this month Glam Bag!  I will be back next week, and I will have some great reviews of products I packed for traveling.  Hope you all have a great weekend!

July 2013 Birchbox

allHowdy everyone!  It’s time for my monthly Birchbox review.  This month’s theme is “Power Play” and it has no relevance to the items in the box.  Alright, let get to it!

Benefit Triple Performing Facial Emulsion ($28.00) – A sheer, oil-free facial lotion with SPF 15 sun protection.

Total Moisture Facial Cream ($38.00) – Formulated for normal to dry skin, this concentrated facial cream provides immediate and long-term hydration for an ultra-radiant complexion.

It’s Potent! Eye Cream ($32.00) – This powerful eye cream, containing a peptide complex known to help restore elasticity and firmness, fades dark circles and helps smooth fine lines for brighter, younger-looking eyes

When I first opened my box I was somewhat disappointed about these samples.  I saw other people have blogged about getting fun Benefit makeup products and I was hoping to try something new.  But, now that I’ve had time to read more about these I am actually pretty excited.

Also, I know it’s ridiculous, but I love the way the bottles look and I kind of want to buy the full size for that reason alone.

Pürminerals CC Cream ($38.00) – Using a blend of clarifying meadowsweet and brightening wheat germ extract, the silicone-free formula works to erase dark spots and even your overall skin tone. All shades come with incredible SPF 40 protection.

I already use the tinted mineral moisturizer in this brand and I really like that it givse lightweight coverage without causing my sensitive skin to break out.  I am really looking forward to trying this CC cream.  I haven’t tried a CC cream yet!

Number 4 Super Comb Prep & Protect ($32.00) – Natural conditioners—including black currant, soy yogurt, algae, and yerba mate—combine to restore hydration to dry hair, while the unique UV/Color Polar Shield protects dyed or sun-exposed locks.

I am excited to try this out.  I have a clarifying shampoo from this brand that I got in a different Birchbox and I really like it.  I enjoy the fact that their products are sulfate free.

tintCaudalie Divine Legs ($38.00) – Caudalie’s unique blend of exotic oils—grape, hibiscus, sesame, and argan—joins forces with patented antioxidant grape-seed polyphenols to soften and firm legs.  The tinted formula imparts a subtle tan and has grown-up shimmer to mask flaws.

I have tried and liked other Caudalie products, so I am looking forward to this.  It claims that the tint will stay on until washed away with soap and water.  If that is true I will definitely be pleased.

Tan Towel ($24.00 for 10 pack) – Each wipe is infused with dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a self-tanning agent that reacts with proteins and amino acids in your skin. Each 7-by-9-inch towelette is big enough to evenly coat about half your body.

I’ve used Tan Towels before and I like them.  Kind of annoying that this is only enough for a 1/2 body application, but I can usually make them go farther by neglecting my torso.

Overall I am pretty pleased with my Birchbox this month.  Although tomorrow or Wednesday I will be posting my Glam Bag review and I am LOVING that!  Still, not bad Birchbox.  Not bad at all.

In related Birchbox news, did anyone else see this Birchbox blog post on how to make an organizer out of old boxes?  It’s from a year ago but I just saw it today.  It’s kind of adorable (and free!) and I think I have to try and do it!  I’ll let you all know if that ever actually happens.  Probably it won’t.

I’m Back! And a Nail Polish Dupe!

Hey everybody!  I’m back from vacation!  Actually, I was back a couple of days ago but I was getting back into the swing of things at home and at work and didn’t really have the time or energy to post until now.  My vacation was so relaxing, and it has been difficult to come back. I am fortunate enough to be heading out again next week.  A long weekend in NYC centered around the Justin Timberlake/Jay-Z Legends of the Summer concert at Yankee Stadium!!  I am SO EXCITED!!

Anyway, enough about my personal life…how about some makeup excitement?!  Last month in my Birchbox I received a Color Club polish called Reign in Spain.  It’s a bright pink/coral color that is perfect for summer, and I really love it.  My review and photo can be viewed here.  I decided I wanted to use some of my Birchbox points to purchase more, but when I went to place my order I realized that it is only available as part of the Wanderlust Collection in a set of mini bottles.  I don’t need or want any of the other colors so I decided not to buy it.

Cut to last week, I was out shopping with my mom and sister and had pretty much forgotten about the whole thing.  We decided to check out the new store 5 Below that opened in Dayton (my home town) just last month.  It was my first time in the store…it’s interesting.  They have a whole section with makeup and nail polish that is very inexpensive.  The nail polish was 3 for $5!  I was looking for white and blue because I wanted to do a patriotic mani –which I did attempt and failed miserably.  I blame the humidity.  ANYWAY…I happened to find a color that looked pretty similar to the Color Club polish I was coveting.  The color is called Guava and the brand is Fresh Paint.  I haven’t had a chance to use it yet, but in the bottle the look pretty much identical.  I am so excited about my great buy!

photo (19)

Mommy bottle and baby bottle. SAME!

Have you ever been to 5 Below?  I definitely could see myself stocking up on cheap polish there in the future as long as I like this Fresh Paint.  Such a good deal!
